STUDENTS AT THE SCHOOL
Interview with a teacher
In May 2024, Code School Finland caught up with one of the teachers involved in the implementation of Teachease which began over two years ago. Back in 2022, the starting point for the school was no different from the usual picture – a basic instruction in simple computer skills and an understanding that this basic instruction is no longer sufficient given the needs of the century.
The teacher explains,
‘Before working with Code School Finland, we only taught the basic computer skills like Microsoft and Adobe programmes. As for our own skills as teachers, they were also quite basic such as the ones mentioned above.’
‘However, what we really wanted to do is to equip our students with the modern technology skills that they will be able to use to their maximum benefit in their everyday lives.’
Implementation period
- How many teachers and students are or have been using the teaching materials (Code and Create, and Develop and Test)?
‘Five computer teachers and 134 students have learned Code School Finland’s Code and Create, and Develop and Test.‘
- Were there any new or surprising needs that arose when you started using the teaching materials?
‘We are happy to report that although the program was new to us, it was easier to understand than we anticipated. I feel the program is well-suited for children, and our students enjoy learning with Code School Finland. They like making up new characters, telling stories, and developing new games to play with their friends.‘
- How well did the materials integrate into your curriculum?
‘The materials integrated well into the curriculum, as the content matches our current curriculum. So, it could be smoothly integrated into our usual lessons.‘
- What kind of support or training did you need when adopting the new teaching materials?
‘A training book with a video tutorial for each lesson would be helpful for our teachers. With such materials, our teachers could easily create lesson plans.‘
- How do you assess the effectiveness of teaching materials in improving student learning outcomes?
‘Students take tests to evaluate their ability of using tools within the programme. We have also seen how their knowledge of coding has improved significantly since using the programme.‘
- What do you like about the teaching materials?
‘I like that the content is clear, has examples, and is quite easy to understand. I feel that it makes teaching and learning smoother. Students are more interested in the knowledge and come away with greater understanding.‘
Learning outcomes
- The overall experience of using the teaching materials?
‘I’ve really enjoyed using the teaching materials. Once students understand how to use the programme, it can be applied in so many different ways and allow them to learn independently and have their own unique learning experience.‘
- Impact of the teaching materials so far?
‘Using Code School Finland’s teaching materials has made teaching less stressful and students are engaged and enjoy using the materials.‘
- Would you recommend these teaching materials to others and why?
‘Yes, because the content is easy to understand and to teach, and students enjoy using it.‘
Interview with students
Code School Finland has also met with the students at Dhammajarinee to hear their side of the story. As we usually work with teachers and school management, we saw this as a unique opportunity to gain insight into the thoughts and feelings of those who benefit most from the Teachease materials. For this account, a group of students with a selected spokesperson has been interviewed.
Q: What types of materials (e.g., textbooks, digital resources, hands-on
activities) do you use most often in your classes?
‘Textbooks and digital resources on computers.‘
Q: Which of these materials do you find most helpful for your learning and
why?
‘In my opinion, internet media is the most helpful for learning, because I feel it is
the most up-to-date and fastest way to gain information.‘
Q: What do you like about the Code School Finland teaching materials?
‘I like it because it feels new and unlike anything else we’ve used before. It’s very
convenient and easy to use. If people talk about writing code, it sounds difficult,
like lots of letters, numbers, and symbols. But, when I got to know the teaching
materials of Code School Finland, I felt that everyone could learn to code easily.‘
Q: What would you change about the teaching materials to make them
better?
‘I would like to have more independent study, to use the tools by myself to study
their uses and try to apply them in various ways.‘
Q: Is there anything else you would like to share about your experiences with
the teaching materials at your school?
‘My classmates and I love Code School Finland’s learning materials and use them
to create stories, games, and many characters. Since the school has brought the
program to teach in the classroom, learning has been more fun and we’ve
become better at being able to solve problems on our own.‘
