From AI users to AI creators in one workshop
In a single workshop, students moved from using AI to training, testing and evaluating their own AI models.
This summer in Oulu, we held an AI workshop for students from Teikyo School in Japan. The students explored machine learning with Teachable Machine, developed as part of the award-winning Generation AI project by Code School Finland together with the University of Eastern Finland, the University of Helsinki and the University of Oulu.
During the workshop, the students worked in teams to create and test their own AI applications. They saw first-hand that an AI model does not simply know the right answer: what it learns depends on the examples used to train it.
As one student reflected after the workshop:
“I learned how AI is developed and discovered how it works behind the scenes.”
— Mizuki, Teikyo School
The Generation AI learning environment was recently recognised with the European Union Digital Skills Award.
This is AI literacy in practice: not only using AI, but understanding how it works.
