Computational thinking and coding in IB primary
A school not afraid of excellence and innovation
Dresden International School is the premier IB school in Saxony that regularly appears on various lists of top-ranking educational institutions in Germany. DIS is a vibrant international community with over 500 students from 50 different countries, but its approach to keeping its reputation is quite German – the school sets ambitious goals and spares no effort in achieving them.
In 2023, DIS took a more active approach in ensuring their students leave school digitally literate and equipped for further professional education and modern work life. The effort to incorporate digital skills into the core curriculum brought about a cooperation with Code School Finland with a view to implementing Teachease modules at DIS.
After the success of the first full academic year, the cooperation has now entered its second year with more modules, teacher training, and additional projects.
‘The interest in the new courses was so high, our
students had to queue up to join.

Aligning Teachease with the best international standards
DIS is an IB school with an impressive accreditation portfolio. Besides being a CIS-accredited school, it is a part of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
Sam Nelson, Digital Learning Coordinator and one of the teachers who took part in the implementation of the Teachease modules, stated in an interview that proper alignment with the school’s standards and objectives is a big factor in making decisions on any external solutions:
‘Our status as a CIS-accredited IB World School is very important to us at DIS, and informs our curriculum planning at every stage. As such, we made the effort to review the compliance of the Teachease curriculum with all the standards we are aligned with, including the objectives of the IB curriculum. Another factor to consider was GDPR compliance, being a school based in the EU.’
Implementation and results
The school worked out a unique implementation strategy – rolling out selected Teachease modules in an after-school coding club first and adding them to the core curriculum in the following academic year. Anne-Marie Rénes, a home room teacher, stated in an interview that the results of this strategy were impressive from the start:
‘There was such high interest that children had to be put on the waiting list to join the new courses.’
According to Teachease customer schools, one of the principal academic advantages of the service is that it brings project-based and student-centred learning into the classroom. When it comes to modern pedagogical practices, DIS is one of the most advanced Teachease customer schools. For some cultures, Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a novel concept, and teachers may be hesitant about introducing it into their classrooms. We asked Sam and Anne-Marie to share their thoughts:
‘Children love independence in the classroom; they are more motivated, and the end results are better. Where appropriate, we allow students to take the lead. When tasks and projects become more challenging from an academic point of view, there is enough scaffolding in the Teachease materials to provide sufficient support to students. In addition, we have implemented a number of new learning techniques. For example, when someone has a question, they need to ask at least three peers before turning to a teacher. This can only be positive, regardless of the culture.
