Since 2021, we have worked with the Google Data Center in Hamina to provide teachers with skills and tools to teach coding and robotics in schools. The program, Code School for Kymenlaakso, so far has trained over 100+ teachers in Hamina, Pyhtää and Kotka elementary schools, who in turn have held coding and robotics classes with ~3000 students. Additionally, the program has trained teachers to continue as certified trainers and expand the program to more schools in the region. The learning contents are designed to align with the goals set by the National Board of Education.
During school year 2023-2024 the program provides class teachers teaching materials and robotic kits, offers them pedagogical support by Code School Finland and technical support by vocational students from Ekami college.
Based on the success of the program in Kymenlaakso, the Code School program has already expanded to other Google Data Center regions in Ireland and Belgium, with Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany starting this fall.
“Although coding and robotics have been in the Finnish core curriculum since 2016, we still hear from teachers that they need practical training and devices. Thanks to Google’s support, we have empowered teachers in Kymenlaakso by offering comprehensive training programs and hands-on support as they embark on teaching this new subject”, adds Kaisu Pallaskallio, CEO of Code School Finland
